The seventh edition of Art Basel Miami Beach closed on Sunday, December 7, 2008 and
more than 250 galleries from 33 countries exhibited works by over 2,000 artists.

With a program of special exhibitions, performances, panel discussions, visits to private
collections, and crossover events featuring film, music, and architecture, the show attracted
more than 40,000 visitors and 1,800 journalists from all over the globe.
Many thousands of guests attended the surrounding cultural exhibitions and events, while

renowned artists and leading artworld personalities participated in the programs of Art Basel
Miami Beach.
The visitors included art collectors, museum professionals, and art enthusiasts who flew in from all

over the USA and the rest of the world. A great many artists were also drawn to the event, among
them Chuck Close, Ai Weiwei, James Rosenquist, Olafur Eliasson, Philip Taaffe, Jeff Koons,
AA Bronson, Vik Muniz, and Francesco Vezzoli. Over 100 museum groups visited the show with d
elegations from their boards of trustees, as did private collectors North and South America,
Europe and the emerging markets of the art world.
Despite the difficult broader economic situation, Art Basel Miami Beach proved that high-quality

works remain in strong demand, as collectors rewarded excellent material and strong booth
presentations with steady sales throughout the week. Many exhibitors reported satisfactory to
excellent results given the current conditions
.

Art Basel Miami Beach, the sister art fair to Art Basel Switzeland, reflected the US economy.

Less parties. Less free stuff. (Coffee $5)
My favourite?  Satellite fairs, Nada, Scope + Pulse, held under massive tents and full of great

energy and emerging art.  A tall, red dinosaur by Timothy Berg ($14,000) was sold (!),
so I bought a tiny one - featured in the NY Times!
The Rubell Collection, a huge warehouse space, featured a huge pile of bananas, a table full of

100 cereal boxes and incredibly hip folks eating the above ‘breakfast’ before viewing
‘30 Americans’, the Rubell show of African-American artists.
A Jeff Koons dog, purchased for $750 at the LA Museum, now selling for $7,500.  Sotheby’s

catalogues ‘re-designed’ with Mickey Mouse faces (Nelson Leirner). GLITTER-Mark Swanson’s
put crystals on black-painted elk antlers. FUN- Huge pile of bananas, to go with multi cereal boxes
at Rubell. SATIRE- Reinaldo Sanguino’s large ceramic black crowns (= power) on today’s
power statement: branded fashion boxes. Former Montreal furrier Robert Landau showed the
classics: Max Ernst, Juan Miro, Paul Miro, Picasso at his gallery’s booth and noted that sales
depended ‘on the quality of art shown.’
The Margulies Collection was amazing, as always.
Noted everywhere? Barack Obama images: T shirts. Paintings. Prints.

Montreal gallerist Pierre François Ouellette, showing at PHOTO MIAMI did extremely well
with local artists Chih-Chien Wang and Adad Hannah whose work is on the cover of
Canadian Art this month !
